Reproductions and Permissions Requests/Price List
Permission to reproduce documents, photographs, films and sound recordings, in whole or in part, is granted on a case-by-case basis depending on the condition of the original and on the provisions of United States copyright law and other laws governing the reproduction of documents.
As is true for many archival repositories in the United States, the YIVO Archives does not own the copyright to papers that have been transferred to it unless the donor of the papers was the copyright owner and assigned her/his rights to the YIVO Institute.
In the case of private letters, the original writer of the letter, or her/his heirs or assignees, is the copyright owner. Permission to publish verbatim quotations or texts which may surpass the "fair use" standard as defined in Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act, must be sought from the original copyright owner or from her/his heirs or assignees.
Researchers wishing to publish verbatim quotations from documents in the YIVO Archives must send a request in writing to the Chief Archivist, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, 15 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011, archives@yivo.cjh.org, notifying their intention to publish. Researchers assume all responsibility for following the copyright and privacy laws of the U.S., as well as the laws of all other countries, and they assume all responsibility for the consequences of publishing any part of a document or image housed in the YIVO Archives.
In requesting permission to publish or reproduce originals from the YIVO Archives, users must agree in advance to assume all responsibility for publishing any part of a document or image and users must agree in advance to hold harmless (including court costs and attorneys fees) the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research from any action involving infringement of the rights of an author or illustrator or her/his heirs or descendants in common law or under statutory copyright.
For images or documents used in publications or exhibitions or online, a credit line to the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is required.
