Israel Zajd was born in 1909 in Hrubieszow, where he graduated from high school. He went to Warsaw, where he joined the Jewish Labor Bund Sports Organization Morgenshtern (Morning Star) and became its secretary. He fought with Anders Army at Monte Cassino, where he was wounded. He refused a Polish Army medal for bravery as a protest against anti-semitism in the Polish Army.
During the first days of World War II, Zajd left Warsaw and reached Lithuania, and then attempted to return to Warsaw. He was captured by the Russians while crossing the border and was imprisoned. He was finally freed after the Stalin-Sikorski agreement. After the war, he ended up in Australia. He considered it his life's duty to assemble a record of the activities of Morgenshtern. He died in 1986 after a long illness.
