Displaced Persons Camps ( or DP Camps) for Jewish Holocaust survivors were established in Austria in 1945 by UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency). They were administered by the U.S. Army and UNRRA and later by the International Refugee Organization (IRO). The camps existed until 1952. The number of Jewish residents in the camps was highest in 1948 when it reached 25,000. The Jewish DP's were represented by the Central Committee of Liberated Jews. The DP population consisted mainly of refugees from Hungary, Rumania, Poland and Czechoslovakia. There were altogether 12 camps located in Salzburg, Linz, Ebelsberg, Saalfelden, Puch, Hallein, Wegscheid, Wels and Enns. With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the enactment of the Displaced Persons Act in 1948 in the U.S. a gradual closing of the camps began. Most of the camps were closed by 1952. The records of the DP camps and centers in Austria were received from various sources between 1946 and 1960. The records were gathered as a result of a wide collection project on the experience of Jewish displaced persons.

Included are materials from Bad Gastein, Bad Ischel, Bindermichel, Ebelsberg, Ebensee, Enns, Hallein, Ranshofen, Steyr, Wegscheid (Tyler 337), Wels. Files of organizations include: Israelitische Kultusgemeinde, Central Committee of Liberated Jews in Upper Austria, International Committee for Jewish Concentration Camp Inmates, AJDC, Jewish Agency. Files of camps are arranged by camp name and include records of camp committees and of other institutions active in the camps. Files of supervising authorities include materials from the U.S. military, UNRRA and IRO.
