Jewish historian. Earned his doctoral degree at the University of Vienna in 1925. His dissertation was entitled "The Jews of Galicia in their Struggle for Political Emancipation." In the inter-war period Friedman published studies on the Jews of Galicia and Lodz. Lecturer at the Institute of Judaic Studies in Warsaw. After World War II Friedman collected documentation on the Holocaust and wrote extensively on the subject. First director of the Central Jewish Historical Commission in Poland in the post-war period. Consultant to the Nuremberg International Military Tribunal. Lecturer at Columbia University. Director of YIVO- YAD Vashem bibliographical series on the Holocaust. Born in Lwow, Poland. After the war settled in the United States.
