The Louis Lamed Foundation was established by the Detroit Jewish communal leader, Louis Lamed, in 1940.  The Foundation which was active until 1960, awarded annual prizes to the authors of outstanding works in Hebrew and Yiddish.  It also supported publications dealing with the bilingual character of Jewish literature. Shmuel Niger was chairman from 1941 to 1953 and jury members included Joseph Opatoshu, Abraham J. Heschel, Isaac N. Steinberg.  Winners included Jacob Glatstein, Israel Efros, Menahem Boraisha, I.J. Schwartz, H. Ayalti, Aaron Zeitlin, Jacob Isaac Segal, Zalman Shneur, Chaim Tchernowitz, H. Leivick and Aaron Glanz-Leieles.  Lamed also established a chair for Jewish Studies at Wayne State University.
