Accumulated by the YIVO Committee in Shanghai from 1946 to 1948 partly in preparation for the exhibition "Jewish Life in Shanghai" held at the YIVO, N.Y. in 1948-1949.  The exhibition related primarily to the Shanghai Ghetto.      The Shanghai Ghetto was established by Japanese occupying forces in 1943.  Among its residents were the Jews who had settled in China at the turn-of-the-century as well as Eastern European Jewish refugees who had fled to China to escape Nazi oppression.  The ghetto was in existence until the departure of the Japanese forces in 1945.
