General Association of Jews of France.  Administrative body representing all Jews in the occupied and free zones of France.  Established in accordance with a decree of November 1941 by Xavier Vallat, the Vichy government's Commissioner for Jewish Affairs, in compliance with a request by the Nazis. The UGIF was divided into Northern and Southern Zones, corresponding to occupied and free France.  The Northern Zone, with its center in Paris had 84 offices, called sections, each of which belonged to one of seven functional groups:  General Services;  Administration and Finance;  Social Services;  Youth Activities and Vocational Training;  Medical Assistance and Child Care;  Canteens and Food Supply;  Provisioning.  The Southern Zone consisted of seven Directorates each of which absorbed an already existing autonomous Jewish organization, such as HICEM, OSE, ORT, and the Alliance Israelite.
