Member of a distinguished Jewish family in Russia which was known for its efforts on behalf of Russian Jewry with the Tsarist authorities.  Banker, philanthropist, communal leader.  Patron of scientific, cultural, and social institutions and of writers, artists and musicians. Gunzburg fought to prevent the passing of anti-Jewish decrees and participated in the Pahlen Commission (1883-1888) which was established to review the laws pertaining to Jews.  Headed the Hevrah Mefitsei Haskalah (Society for the Promotion of Culture).  As Chairman of the Jewish Colonization Association (JCA) Gunzburg encouraged the development of agriculture and crafts among Jews.  Born in Zvenigorodok, province of Kiev.
