A native of Glens Falls, NY, Rochelle G. Saidel (also formerly known as Rochelle Saidel-Wolk) received her undergradate education at Barnard College, Columbia University, and Queens College, CUNY. She received her M.S. in Education from Queens College in 1967 and her Ph.D. in Political Science from The Graduate School and University Center, CUNY. She served for nine years in Albany and NYC as a special assistant to Senator Manfred Ohrenstein, the Democratic leader of the New York State Senate, in a capacity that included Holocaust education and planning for the Museum of Jewish Heritage in NYC. She also worked in the media sector as the television producer, writer, and host of Heritage and Destiny, and a journalist for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA). In addition to the JTA, Saidel's articles have appeared in print media that includes The Jerusalem Post, The Forward, Reform Judaism, Catholic News Service, Newsday, Women's Review of Books, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Minerva: A Review of Science, Learning and Policy, Lilith, and Midstream. She is the author or editor of the following books: Nazi War Criminals in America: Facts, Action (with Charles R. Allen, Jr.) (1981), Outraged Conscience: Seekers of Justice for Nazi War Criminals in America (1984), Never Too Late to Remember: The Politics behind New York City's Holocaust Museum (1996), Jewish Women of Ravensbruck Concentration Camp (2004), Fiorello's Sister: Gemma La Guardia Gluck's Story (with Gemma La Guardia Gluck) (2007), Sexual Violence against Jewish Women during the Holocaust (with Sonja M. Hedgepeth) (2010), and Mielec, Poland: The Shtetl That Became a Nazi Concentration Camp (2011). The founder and executive director of the Remember the Women Institute, a not-for-profit organization based in NYC that carries out and encourages research and cultural projects that integrate women into history, Saidel's most recent academic interests focus on Jewish women, particularly the fate of Jewish women during the Holocaust.

Description: The collection pertains to Dr. Rochelle G. Saidel's career as a correspondent for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) and the author or editor of several works about the Holocaust, namely the Nazi War Criminals in America: Facts, Action (with Charles R. Allen, Jr.) (1981), the Outraged Conscience: Seekers of Justice for Nazi War Criminals in America (1984), and Never Too Late to Remember: The Politics behind New York City's Holocaust Museum (1996), which was based on her 1989 Ph.D. proposal, The Politics of Memorialization: Creating a Holocaust Museum in New York City and concerns the Museum of Jewish History—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, established in 1997. The collection consists mainly of correspondence (originals and copies), 1948-1990, printed materials (original and copied clippings, periodicals, book excerpts, invitations, newsletters, brochures, flyers, programs, memoranda, notes, typescripts, speeches, press releases, biographies, resumes, lists of publications, book and doctoral proposals, contracts and agreement forms, interviews and questionnaires, legal documents, meeting minutes and proceedings, and television program transcripts), 1941-1997, photographs and corresponding negatives and captions, four 8" IBM diskettes, and miscellaneous materials, 1982-2000. A significant part of the collection consists of correspondence with prominent writers, artists, politicians, organizational and institutional leaders, scholars, and media figures including: Dr. Charles R. Allen, Jr., Mayor Abraham D. Beame, President Jimmy Carter, Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman, Henry A. Kissinger, Beate Klarsfeld, Dr. Norman Lamm, Benjamin Meed, Nathan Rapoport, and S. L. Shneiderman. Also included are lists of alleged former Nazis and Nazi collaborators, many of whom immigrated to the United States following World War II and later stood trial for their wartime activities. Among those names appearing with greater frequency in the collection are: Basil Artishenko, John Demjanjuk, Feodor Fedorenko, Vilis A. Hazners, Liudas Kairys, Karl Linnas, Bolesavs Maikovskis, Wolodymir Osidach, Conrad Schellong, Valerian Trifa, and Frank Walus.
