Administrative/Biographical History
Joel A. Zack is an architect and the president of Heritage Tours (U.S.A.), Inc., a Fulbright Scholar, Kinne Fellow, and an author, who has traveled widely. Since 1985, he has been active in cultural tourism and in the preservation of historic sites. In 1995, he spent a 5-month-period surveying and creating color slides of approximately 50 synagogues throughout Romania in an effort to document the country's then still-existent Jewish life. Zack also provided blueprints, floor plans, and general historical information about these structures. The latter included details such as the given structure's estimated date of establishment, whether it had ever been rebuilt or refurbished, its religious orientation, whether it was Ashkenazic or Sephardic or then currently in use, and the approximate size of the local Jewish community. The collection itself consists of Zack's more than 3,000 color slides of these various synagogues.
