Sara Karcewicz (also known as Sonia Kartzevitz; married name Rubinroit) was born in Berdichev, Ukraine on January 12, 1912. Her family fled to Wysokie Litewskie, Poland, during or shortly after World War I. She immigrated to the United States in 1929, married in 1934, and had two sons. In the United States, she worked as a bookkeeper for her husband in his business ventures.
