Emanuel Scherer (1901-1977)
Emanuel Scherer was born on August 5, 1901 in Krakow. He was exposed to Yiddish culture at an early age. He graduated from Jagellonian University with a doctorate of jurisprudence. In 1918, he joined the Bund and became a member fof the Central Committee of the Krakow Tsukunft, the Bundist youth movement. He moved to Warsaw in 1930, was a member of the Warsaw Committee of the Bund, and was elected to the Central Committee in 1935. In 1938, he was elected to the Warsaw City Council. He was also Secretary of the Trade Union of Office Workers.
Dr. Scherer contributed articles and essays to the Bundist press in Yiddish and Polish. During the early days of World War II, he and his wife, Bronka, escaped Warsaw and went to Wilno. They later succeeded in reaching the United States and settled in New York. After Arthur Zygielbojm's protest suicide, Scherer took his place on the Polish National Council in London. After the war, he rejoined his family in New York and became Secretary of the Bund Coordinating Committee and editor of Undzer Tsayt.
