Administrative/Biographical History
Menukha Deborah Rabinowitz-Zalcman was born in 1904 in Bialystok, then in the Russian Empire. Following high school, he became committed to the cause of secular education of Jewish children, first in Bialystok, then in Warsaw. They left Warsaw in 1931 for Brussels, where they were active in Jewish secular schools and children's camps. They immigrated to the United States prior to the German occupation of Belgium. After World War II, the Jewish Labor Committtee sent them to Paris, where they organized and managed the Vladeck Orphanage for Jewish Children in Brenoy, France. Upon returning to New York, they directed Camp Hemshekh in the Catskills, as well as the Workmen's Circle Children's Camp. Later, Mrs. Zalcman directed the Workmen's Circle Golden Ring organization for seniors. She died in 1983 and was predeceased by her husband.
