Administrative/Biographical History
Born in 1896 in Derazhnya, a town in the Russian Ukraine. Was an anarchist, labor activist, and one of the first female vice presidents of the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union (ILGWU). In 1913, immigrated to the United States. In New York, joined the Local 25 of the ILGWU. In 1920, was elected to the Local 25's executive board. Grateful for her work on behalf of the ILGWU, the union appointed her an organizer in the late 1920s. In 1933, spearheaded the Dressmakers General Strike in Los Angeles. In 1934, was elected as a vice president of the ILGWU, and served on the general executive board. Between 1934 and 1944, was one of the most successful organizers in the United States. Published two memoirs: Bread upon the Waters (1945) and Days of Our Lives (1958). Worked for the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League and for the American Trade Union Council for the Histadrut, Israel's labor organization. Was secretary of the anarchist newspaper, The Road to Freedom and a member of the Sacco-Vanzetti Defense Committee. Died on December 4, 1965 in Miami, Florida.
