Administrative/Biographical History
Born November 27, 1896 as Alexander Ubsushone in Talne, then a Ukrainian town in the Russian Empire. Changed his name to Charles S. Zimmerman upon immigration to the United States in 1913. Became an American socialist activist and trade union leader, who was an associate of Jay Lovestone. Was an official of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) for five decades, which he joined in 1916. In 1917, joined the Socialist Party of America. Joined the Communist Party of America at its formation, in 1919. From 1923 until 1958, except for one interlude, was prominent in the Local 22 of the ILGWU in New York. Was influential in establishing the Needle Trades Workers Industrial Union. Was a three-time candidate in the 1920s for the New York State Assembly on the ticket of the Workers Party. In 1946, was sent to Europe on behalf of the Jewish Labor Committee to survey the political situation there. In 1958, became the head of the Dress Waistmakers Union. Also served as chairman of the Civil Rights Committee of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL–CIO). Died on June 3, 1983. In addition to this collection, an additional collection of Zimmerman's papers is housed at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY.
