Administrative/Biographical History
Born in 1896 in Proskurov, then part of the Russian Empire, and raised in Philadelphia, Casman was an actress and singer in the Yiddish theater. She began performing at age 15 in Yiddish and English vaudeville, and in regular theater. She recorded Yiddish songs and couplets for the Victor and Columbia labels. She married playwright Samuel Steinberg and collaborated with him on songs and shows. Her biggest hit, written in 1923, was Yosl, Yosl, which was later recordedĀ by the Andrew Sisters. Casman performed at a number of venues, including Edelstein's People's Theater, the Odeon Theater, and the Roxbury. She also toured internationally, inĀ London, Paris, Berlin, Riga, Warsaw, and in Argentina. In 1973, she appeared in the film The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob. She also appeared for several years on the television show, The Goldbergs, reprising her role as Pathe in a 1950 film version of the show. Casman died in New York in 1984.
