Rabbi, educator, and author. Studied in the yeshivas of Eishishok, Volozhin, and Slobodka. Headed the yeshiva in Suwalki in 1913-1914 and then served as Orthodox Rabbi in Stepney and Birmingham, England (1914-1921). Served as Rabbi in Revere, Mass. (1921-1924). Settled in Bayonne, NJ in 1924, where he served as Rabbi of Congregation Beth Abraham until his death in 1978. Author of four books, in Yiddish and Hebrew, on religious subjects. Born in Sokoly, near Lomzhe, in 1888

Description: Papers consist of manuscripts of Charney's sermons, blessings, and speeches as well as of his notes and manuscripts of some of his books. This material is almost entirely in Hebrew and Yiddish, with some articles on non-religious subjects in English. There are also manuscripts of his mother's (Braina Chaya Rumianek) Yiddish speeches on religious subjects, photographs, family letters and lists of supporters of the congregation's Talmud Torah. There are letters from Abraham Regelson and American rabbis, including Eliezer Silver and Joseph Soloveichik. There are also letters from the following non-American rabbis: A.
