Administrative/Biographical History
The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society stationed a representative on Ellis Island, starting in 1909, in order to assist arriving Yiddish-speaking immigrants. These people were guided through the immigration process, were represented by HIAS in cases where they were denied entry to the U.S. on grounds of illness, insanity or were liable to become a public charge and finally, were put in contact with relatives or sponsors in the U.S
