Administrative/Biographical History
Joseph Cherniavsky was born in 1894 in Lubni (Ukraine) into a family of klezmorim. He studied cello in the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and, at that time, joined the Zimro Jewish Chamber Orchestra. In 1918 he came with that group to the U.S. He composed and conducted for theaters of Maurice Schwartz, Boris Thomashefsky, Ludwig Satz and others. He led the Yiddish American Jazz Band. In 1928 he settled in Hollywood. In the early 1940's he led the Boy Meets Girl Orchestra. Laura Cherniavsky was Joseph's wife. She was a music arranger, and was also involved with the Zimro Orchestra
