Administrative/Biographical History
Yiddish and English writer, editor, socialist leader, prominent figure in Jewish public life. Founder of the *Jewish Daily Forward* and its editor-in-chief from 1901 until his death. Co-founder of the first Jewish trade union in the U.S., the Progressive Tailors' Union. Other newspapers and periodicals Cahan contributed to: *Di arbeter tsaytung* (editor, 1894-1895); *Zukunft* (editor, 1893-97); *New York Sun*, *New York Press*, *North American Review*, *Short Story*, *Atlantic Monthly*. Cahan published several works of fiction in English, the best known being, *The Rise of David Levinsky*. Born in Podberezha (Paberze), near Vilna. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1882.
