Administrative/Biographical History
The Yiddish Dictionary Committee was organizaed in 1953 to carry out the preparation and publication of the Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language (*Groyser verterbukh fun der yidisher shprakh*). The dictionary was designed as an all-encompassing reference work which would contain all known lexical elements of the Yiddish language, covering historical and cultural phases of development as well as all levels of usage, from literary to colloquial. Editors of the first volumes of the dictionary were Judah Joffe and Yudel Mark. In addition to the editorial staff, the Yiddish Dictionary Committee was in touch with about 300 collectors whose task was to collect words and expressions. The Committee's work was sponsored variously by the YIVO Institute, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Institute for Yiddish Lexicology at City College in New York and Columbia University. At the present time, four volumes have been published, covering the first letter of the Yiddish alphabet.
