Administrative/Biographical History

Frank Rosenblatt was born on May 11, 1882 in Lapin, Russia. He was the son of a merchant and scholar. He attended yeshivas and a Russian high school. In the beginning of the 20th century, he was influenced by Zionist and Socialist-Bundist ideologies. Fear of being arrested by the Czarist police led him to flee to Switzerland, from which he immigrated to the United States in 1903. In 1910, he graduated from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Economics. He was an expert on American tariffs, a subject that he wrote extensively about in the Yiddish and English press. In 1915, he was elected General Secretary of the Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle). In 1919, the Joint Distribution Committee appointed him to be their representative in the Far East of Russia. He established a publishing house, "Frank-Maurice," over which he presided. He died on November 7, 1927.

The collection reflects the period surrounding the end of World War I; the changes associated with shifting leadership in Russia; the battles of the White Army and Red Army; and the generally difficult economic and political situation of the Jewish population.

Included are descriptions and reports of pogroms and the murders of Jews; minutes of kehilla meetings; and minutes pertaining to the local governments, both Jewish and general.

Material will prove particularly useful for researchers studying the economic and political situation of late 19th century and early 20th century Russian-Jewry.
