Administrative/Biographical History
Jewish historian, sociologist, editor, communal worker. Member, Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society, St. Petersburg and contributor to its quarterly *Yevreyskaya Starina* (The Jewish Past). Co-editor of several Jewish encyclopedias. Contributed to many Jewish dailies and periodicals including *Der tog*, *Zukunft*, *Talpiot*. From 1921 to 1937 he was secretary of the Hilfsverein der Deutschen Juden in Berlin. In 1931, Wischnitzer took part in the founding of the Haffkine Foundation for the Benefit of Yeshivot and became its executive secretary. His duties included travelling to *yeshivot* in Poland, Rumania and other countries, observing their curricula and evaluating them for funding purposes. Born in Rovno, Volhynia. Lived in Galicia, Vienna and Berlin. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1941.
