Administrative/Biographical History
Jewish composer, music teacher, conductor, choral director, pianist. Music director of the Central Synagogue in Manhattan. Director of the Workmen's Circle Choral Society. Active in a number of musical organizations. From 1937 to 1939, was a member of the Mailamm Society. Founder of the Jewish Music Forum in 1939. Co-founder of the Jewish Liturgical Music Society of America and the National Music Council of the Jewish Welfare Board. Colleague of the American Conference of Cantors. Weiner composed about 200 musical works, including liturgical, and instrumental works, an opera, ballets and cantatas. Weiner was on the faculty of the School of Sacred Music of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, the Cantors' Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. Born in Cherkassy, near Kiev, Ukraine. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1914.
