Administrative/Biographical History
Yiddish newspaper based in New York, established in 1897. Abraham Cahan was the editor from 1903 to 1951. For much of its existence the newspaper espoused the cause of democratic socialism and supported the Jewish labor movement. One of its popular columns, the "Bintl briv" offered advice on a variety of topics to several generations of Jewish immigrants. The paper reached peak circulation of nearly 200,000 during World War I after which its readership declined steadily. By 1970 circulation had fallen to 44,000. In the 1980s the Jewish Daily Forward changed from a daily to a weekly paper.
