Administrative/Biographical History
Adolf Otto Eichmann, Nazi official and S.S. officer during World War II, was chief of operations in the Nazi plan to annihilate European Jewry. He was abducted by the Israeli government in May 1960 from his hiding place in Argentina. Eichmann was tried by the Jerusalem District Court and was charged with "crimes against the Jewish people.... crimes against humanity.... war crimes, and membership in an 'enemy organization'." The trial lasted from April to December 1961. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. Eichmann was hanged after his appeal was dismissed by the Israeli Supreme Court in May 1962 and after the president of Israel rejected his plea for clemency.
