Administrative/Biographical History
Teacher, writer, administrator in Jewish immigration relief organizations. Dijour devoted a major part of his life to dealing with the problem of Jewish immigration. Member of the Jewish Populist Party (Yiddishe Folks Partey) in the Ukraine. General secretary of EMIGDIREKT in Berlin. Held major administrative positions in HIAS and HICEM in Berlin, Paris, Lisbon and New York, from 1923 to the 1950s. Member of the Board of Directors of the YIVO Institute. Contributed to the Russian press and wrote books and articles in English, Yiddish and German on the problem of Jewish immigration, including articles in the *YIVO bleter*. Born in Zvenigorod, district of Kiev. Lived in Poland, Germany, France. In 1940 moved to Lisbon where the offices of HICEM were established after its evacuation from Nazi-occupied Paris. In 1942 immigrated to the U.S.
