The *Einsatzgruppen* were special mobile killing units established by the *Reichsicherheitshauptamt* (RSHA - Reich Security Main Office). Positioned in the rear of the German army, they functioned mainly in German-occupied territories of the U.S.S.R. where they murdered between 500,000 to 1,000,000 Jews. After the combat period was at an end in a particular area the *Einsatzgruppen* became local branches of the RSHA. There were four *Einsatzgruppen* operating in the invaded areas of the U.S.S.R. designated with the letters A, B, C and D. They were subordinated administratively to the respective army command and functionally to the RSHA.
