Founder and principal of the Jewish Real Gymnasium (secondary school) in Wilkomir (Lith. Ukmerge), 1920. Co-founder of the YIVO Institute in Vilna. Consultant, Jewish Education Committee, New York. Vice-president, Council for Jewish Education. Contributed articles to *Vilner tog* (Vilna), *Di naye shul* (Vilna), *Shul vegn* (Warsaw), *Zukunft* (N.Y.), *Jewish Daily Forward* (N.Y.), *Unzer shul* (N.Y.), *Kultur un dertsiung* (N.Y.), *Oyfn shvel* (N.Y.), *Yidisher kemfer*, *Yidishe dertsiung*, *Kinder tsaytung*, *YIVO bleter* (Vilna, N.Y.). Co-editor of *Yidishe shprakh* and editor of *Pedagogisher biuletin* (N.Y.). Co-editor together with Judah Joffe of the *Groyser verterbukh fun der yidisher shprakh* (Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language). Wrote Yiddish textbooks and workbooks for Yiddish schools. Born in Polonga, Lithuania. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1936. Settled in Jerusalem, Israel, 1970.
