Historian. Professor of History at Queens College. Author of works relating to modern European history, with emphasis on nationalism, contemporary Germany and modern Jewish history. History editor of the *Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences* (1929-1935) and an editor of *Jewish Social Studies* (1938-61). UNRRA Director of Education and Culture for Displaced Persons in Germany and Austria. Member of the Research Commission and of the Board of Directors of the YIVO Institute. Born near Vilna. Immigrated to the U.S. in 1907.
