Administrative/Biographical History
Political thinker and activist. Leader of the Left Socialist Revolutionary Party during and after the Russian Revolution of 1917. Commissar of Justice in the first Bolshevik government, 1917-1918. From 1923 acted as foreign representative of the legalized LSR in Russia. In the 1930s and 1940s chief exponent of the Jewish Territorialist movement which aimed to establish autonomous Jewish settlements throughout the world. In 1935, together with Ben-Adir, co-founded the Freeland League for Jewish Territorial Colonization in London. From 1943 to 1956 was the editor of the League's official organ *Oyfn shvel* (On the Threshold). Played an active role in the League's efforts to establish colonies in Australia, Surinam and other countries. Member, Board of Directors of the YIVO Institute. His writings include: a series of books on the Russian Revolution such as *Memoirs of a People's Commissar*; articles and books on socialism; a work on the Territorialist movement, *Australia - The Unpromised Land*; and numerous articles on literary and political subjects, published in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew and English. Born in Dvinsk, Latvia. Left Russia in 1923. Lived in Berlin and in London. Settled in the U.S. in 1943.
