Socialist, philosopher, social and political thinker, writer, literary critic. Founding member and theoretician of the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in Russia. Ideologist of Yiddishism and Diaspora nationalism which influenced the Jewish territorial and nationalist movements. Ardent propagator of Yiddish language and culture. Chairman of the historic conference on Yiddish language in Czernowitz, 1908. Born in Horodok, Byelorussia. Lived in Russia and Switzerland. Settled in the U.S. in 1908.
