Administrative/Biographical History
The TSYSHO, Tsentrale Yidishe Shul Organizatsye (Central Yiddish School Organization) was a secular Yiddish school system active in Poland from 1921 to ca. 1940. Based in Warsaw, the TSYSHO maintained a network of elementary schools, high schools and teachers' seminaries. It set curriculum standards for all its schools. The TSYSHO established Yiddish as the language of instruction. It encouraged progressive methods in education and emphasized subjects which previously had assumed only minor importance in Jewish schools, such as sciences, art, physical education. In 1935 there were 15,486 students and 169 schools. An important branch office existed in Vilna, the Tsentraler Bildungs Komitet (Central Education Committee) or TSBK. This office supervised the TSYSHO schools in the Vilna region. The TSBK schools contributed much to the development of the TSYSHO curriculum and had a greater student enrollment than the other TSYSHO schools.
