Michael Avrut is a psychotherapist, collector, and reseller of ephemera specializing in maps, posters, books, and restaurant menus.  He acquired the periodicals found in this collection via a friend, who purchased them.  Avrut later donated the materials to the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.  The periodicals include newspapers and magazines that are primarily from the 1930s and 1940s, with the greater majority representing the years 1934-1945.  Also included are two newspapers from pre-World War I and World War I, proper; as well as some post-World War II periodicals.  These English and German-language publications represent various localities throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Germany, Great Britain, and Palestine, and provide a snapshot of daily life, particulary during the Second World War.
