Organized in New York on March 23 or 27, 1884. Incorporated September 15, 1884. The Association, according to histories in its anniversary publications (1924, 1934), was named after Rabbi Israel Salanter Adler, said to be a great philanthropist who had recently died in the home city of the founders, Kaunas in the Russian Empire (today Kovno, Lithuania). The reference appears to be a conflation of two figures: Shmuel Adler, a prominent businessman in Kaunas, and his father, the famous Rabbi Israel Salanter. (Rabbi Salanter died around that time, in 1883, not in Kaunas but in Königsberg, Prussia.) The Association provided sick and death benefits, purchased graves, and functioned as a burial society. It also maintained a free loan fund and a relief fund; held social events; and contributed regularly to charities. It used Washington and Mount Hebron Cemeteries. Dissolved around 2002.
