Born in Siedlce, Poland in 1889. Was a Polish socialist, union organizer, and leader of the Bund prior to World War II. Moved to Warsaw in 1905, where he became involved in anti-Czarist revolutionary activity. In 1906, he was sent to help striking fur workers in Kaluszyn, Poland. In 1913, he helped to organize the general protest strike against the Mendel Beilis trial. In 1919, he returned to Warsaw, where he was elected to the praesidium of the Warsaw Bund and to the executive committee of the trade-union federation. During World War II, he was active in the Warsaw ghetto, helping smuggle in arms in preparation for the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising. As part of the ghetto underground, he organized manufactured fake documents for those marked for liquidation. Fleeing from the ghetto during the time of the uprising, he helped stage the Warsaw uprising, which began on August 1, 1944. Following World War II, he immigrated to the United States, where he wrote his autobiography, Five Years in the Warsaw Ghetto (1959) (originally titled The Stars Bear Witness, 1949). Died in New York in 1959.
