Prominent Yiddish poet of the Jewish socialist and anarchist movements. Born into an assimilated Jewish Russian family, Edelstadt began writing in Russian.  After the pogrom in Kiev in 1881, he immigrated with his family to the U.S. Edelstadt was influenced by the anarchist movement and in 1890 became the editor of the anarchist *Freie Arbeiter Stimme*, a position he held until shortly before his death. Edelstadt's poems, which reflected his involvement with the cause of the worker, attained worldwide popularity among the Jewish working class.  He died of tuberculosis in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 26.
