Prominent Yiddish playwright and journalist who played an important role in the development of the Yiddish theater. Author of more than a hundred plays.  For many of his works, Gordin borrowed and adapted plots from playwrights such as Hugo, Gogol, Ibsen and Shakespeare.  Gordin enjoyed great popular success and his works were performed by the leading Yiddish actors of the day.  Born in Mirgorod, Ukraine. Emigrated to the U.S. in 1891.
