Administrative/Biographical History
Mutual aid society founded in New York in honor or in memory of Barnett Appel. Society appears to have existed as the Barnett Appel Lodge No. 394 Independent Order Brith Abraham prior to 1919. Society filed as a domestic not-for-profit corporation in the State of New York as The Appel Benevolent Society on February 2, 1929. Provided death and Shivah benefits. Covered funeral expenses. Contributed monetary aid to relief funds and various Jewish institutions and agencies, including HIAS, Yeshiva University, and the Jewish Federation. Distributed monetary gifts for the weddings of members and their children. Functioned as a burial society. Society used the Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens, NY.
